I’ve played this game a few times, and it’s more epic than you might at first think. The list below took about five hours to create in a Boston seafront bar – we finally finished and settled on this around 2am.
So here’s how it works. You run through from A-Z, and choose the ultimate best movie starting with each letter. Some letters are easy, a lot of people will agree on Blade Runner for B. But some are really tough – we couldn’t find anything great for Q, X, and Y, and the films we put for those don’t really deserve a place on a top 26 list (Q looks utterly awful to me). But that’s the challenge.
Getting a consensus can be tough, especially with a mixed group of film fanatics and generic blockbuster multiplex watchers.
I’ve listed close-call secondary choices on some of these, because the group couldn’t really agree on the final choice.
If you want to make the game a little more interesting, try taking a shot every time a letter has been agreed upon. Or, before starting somebody writes a list of buzz films on their phone, and every time somebody suggests one of the buzz films, they take a shot.

- Departed (Dog day afternoon)
- French Connection (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

For me, I was open to debate on all the letters except for three: A, P, and U – those films are top 5 all timers for me, and had to take a place on the list. What films would absolutely have to be on your list?
